President's Message - January 30, 2020

Members and Retirees of Local 5328.

PLEASE READ!!

We have some safety issues at the plant that will affect where you may be working.

This started with an issue at Montreal's, St Patrick’s plant with their hoist rails.

A particular brand called, “Cleveland Tram rail” was found to be compromised.  They informed Hamilton East as we have many of these hoist rails, about 9 job centers. The rails at St Patrick’s have what’s called, “micro fractures” and are in need of welding repair. They are basically shut down.

Maintenance did a check on our hoists this afternoon and identified what job centers have  the “Cleveland hoist rails”. At this point, all those hoists are now locked out and job centres are down.

The hoists that are down are, all motos, 54/55, 13/14,  most of bundling, upender, Straight and Cut, #1 Oil temp.

What will happen now is a structural engineer will be in tomorrow to determine if the rails need repair, replace or good to go.

Most that are scheduled on those jobs will be moved to another frame,  utilities, may be given the option to go home or assist other jobs to keep running. For example, a tractor driver for straight and cut to lift off the pieces, booms weigh up driver will take coils off of 13/14, #1 oil temp will shutdown every second round to load coils by tractor. 65 frame will be used as bundle station, two people on upender to manually load large size carriers.

The company says no layoffs with this!! I’ll update the findings tomorrow as they info comes in and communicate.

-The United Way campaign scheduled for the next few weeks has been moved to March.

-Next monthly Union membership meeting is Thursday February 13 at 5:00pm.

Have a great and safe weekend!!
