Health and Safety Report – April 11, 2025

Good Evening Members of USW Local 5328
Please find below a summary of the Health and Safety activity for April 2025.
Incidents:
Incident levels remained very minimal this month.
Current Status:
Several proactive Health and Safety initiatives are currently on hold, including:
- Emergency Response Team
- Health and Safety Culture Workshop
- PPE Storage Area at the Cleaning Line
Due to ongoing challenges, our efforts have shifted toward a more reactive approach, addressing issues as they arise.
Training:
- Ergonomic Training: Delivered to employees working in Oil Temper operations, with a focus on task-specific ergonomics.
- Arc Flash Training: Conducted for all maintenance staff and select employees from other areas. The training was particularly valuable for those less familiar with electrical hazards. We acknowledge that our current electrical safety practices are outdated and see this as the starting point for long-term improvements.
Joint Health and Safety Committee (JHSC):
This month, the JHSC played a more active role in reviewing and participating in PPOs. Their involvement led to more effective identification and resolution of Health and Safety issues on the floor.
Equipment Update:
The final lift truck designated for the Cleaning Line has arrived. Unfortunately, it does not meet the expected specifications and is only capable of handling two coils at a time. This limits its practicality for broader operational use.
Innovation:
We’ve developed a new rack system that eliminates the need for strapping Oil Temper coils while suspended from a crane. Testing of the new system will begin shortly.
Please let me know if you have any questions or would like to discuss any of the above in more detail.
In Solidarity,
Shayne Yeaman
Health & Safety Chair
